Déjà vu

The 2019 season is underway and it feels like déjà vu with another wet April to start the season.

Bowling started with matches on Tuesday afternoon and evening in the Barlows and Whitchurch Leagues and will gradually gather more and more momentum as more teams start their campaigns.

Our thoughts are with a number of members who have managed to injure themselves (not bowling related) before the season started and we hope they will be back with us soon.

If you are not yet a bowler, but live in the area and have been toying with the idea of taking up the sport there is no better time than now. We are offering a six week free trial period including tuition and the loan of bowls. Ideally pop along on a Monday from 1pm or Sunday at 11am, but if these times don’t work for you contact Ann on 07429 519869. We’d love to meet you.

Club Open Evening

The Club Open Evening this year is to be held on 28th March from 6:30pm to 9pm.
It is an ideal opportunity for new people interested in taking up bowls to come along and meet members, have a look at the facilities and, weather permitting have a go at bowling. It is also an opportunity for existing members to catch up with people they may not have seen over the winter and to pay their subs.
The new competitive season starts on the 2nd April, so I’m sure members will be itching to have their first practice and test how the greens are running.

and finally… Malpas League fixtures are available

Malpas (Saturday) League fixtures are now available and you can follow the link from the Team Fixtures and Results (2019) page.
There is still only 1 Division in this League which is disappointing. The League plays on a Saturday afternoon so it is an opportunity for juniors and people who work during the week, to play during the day.
The Club has withdrawn its C Team from this League this year but still plays 2 teams.

Whitchurch Teams and Fixtures

As most Club Members will know by now, this year’s AGM voted to make all of the Chester Road Teams in the Whitchurch League into mixed teams. As a result, all of the teams need to be redesignated as follows:

Fixtures for the Whitchurch League have now been released and you can find links to your team’s fixtures from the Club website under the “Teams” menu item, sub menu “Team Fixtures and Results (2019)” or by clicking here.

Personally, I think giving the teams letters A through H is pretty unappealing even if that is the requirement of the League. How about mixing it up a bit and giving the teams names? Examples could be:
calling the C Team The Chester Road Cougars; or the H Team The Chester Road Hawks. These are just examples, the teams themselves could vote on names at the beginning of the season. If people were really keen they could have badges made and clothing produced!!! But let’s not get carried away yet. Let us know if there is an appetite for names by voting below.

Whitchurch Short Mat Bowls Indoor Open Doubles Tournament

An Open Doubles Tournament is to be held on Sunday 17th February 2019 at the Civic Centre Sports Hall, High St Whitchurch.

The Tournament will be limited to 34 couples. It is open to all doubles partners or you can come on the day to be paired. Everyone welcome.

Draw for play on the morning of the event.

Registration will be from 9.00 am to 10.00 am on the day or you can register in advance. Entry fees of £10 per couple will be payable at registration.

Trophies and prizes will be presented at the completion of the competition.

Refreshments will be available on the day.
